In a delightful series of photographs taken during a rainstorm in Kenya’s Maasai Mara game reserve, a young African elephant calf captured hearts as he struggled to regain his footing in the slippery mud.

'This mud bath has gone wrong mum, I can't get up!' This poor little fellow was left in a slippery position after a deluge in the Maasai Mara

The adorable little chap found himself in a muddy predicament after playtime, prompting him to reach out to his mother for assistance.

‘I’m trying, Mum, but I just can’t make it’ — the young animal struggles to get to his feet but is getting exhausted and ever muddier

The six-month to one-year-old elephant had fallen over and was covered in mud as he attempted to stand up. But with unwavering maternal instinct, his mother quickly came to his rescue. She positioned herself close by, allowing the calf to seek shelter under her massive frame.

‘Pick me up, please!’ the baby elephant trumpets to Mum in distress as the conditions in Kenya send him falling straight back down on his bottom

With her legs as support, he made another attempt to rise, successfully overcoming the challenging conditions.

‘Under here, darling...’ It’s Mum to the rescue as she shelters her son and uses her foot to nudge him upright. The African elephant is thought to be aged six months to one year

Once upright, they ventured off together, but not before the mother took a well-deserved break for a bath and some rest. Wildlife photographer Andy Rouse beautifully captured this heartwarming sequence while tracking migrating wildebeest.

Elephants, known for their close-knit family bonds, find joy in wallowing in the mud, which helps protect their skin from the sun and insects. While the mud bath is exhilarating for elephants of all ages, it can be a struggle for the little ones.

However, with the unwavering support of their mothers, they overcome the challenges and continue their playful adventures.

African elephants, the largest land animals on Earth, live up to 70 years in the wild. The commitment of raising a calf is significant, with females giving birth every two to four years after a lengthy pregnancy of 22 months, the longest among mammals.
