Earlier this year, the community was shaken to its core when a horrifying incident unfolded on a Hawaiian beach. A dog was discovered buried alive, a cruel act committed by an unknown assailant wielding a machete. This distressing tale, though filled with darkness, has found its silver lining. We are excited to share the heartwarming update that the once-suffering dog now thrives in the loving embrace of a caring foster family.
In case you missed the initial report, a witness on the shores of Oahu, Hawaii, had a chilling sight: an individual heartlessly burying a dog, machete in hand, in broad daylight. Quick action was taken as they alerted PAWS of Hawaii, prompting an immediate response from their team to rescue the distressed animal. The dog, named Leialoha, was discovered in a heartbreaking state—sunburned, covered in sores, nearly hairless, with wounds on her legs, and in dire need of medical attention. She was swiftly taken to Aloha Affordable Veterinary Services, where veterinarians provided the evaluation and care she so desperately required.
Amanda Krasniewski and her husband were not new to the world of fostering animals, having gained experience during a vacation in St. Croix. After encountering an initiative that flew adoptable dogs to the mainland to increase their chances of finding permanent homes, the couple adopted a dog named Mocha. This marked the start of their journey into fostering and rescuing animals. Driven by their compassion, they became fosters with PAWS of Hawaii, a decision they have never regretted. Prior to Leialoha, they had already opened their hearts and home to twelve dogs. When Amanda came across PAWS of Hawaii’s plea for help on social media, she wasted no time in offering her assistance.
The initial days were a grueling challenge. “She smelled terrible from being buried and her skin disorders,” Amanda recalled. Leialoha was swollen and in pain. Her condition was so critical that Amanda feared she might not make it through the night. Yet, Leialoha’s resilience began to shine through, and she gradually embarked on her path to recovery. Amanda vividly remembers the first sign of hope: “I visited her the next morning, and she wagged her tail a little. I knew she was a fighter and would make a full recovery from that point.”
In the beginning, Leialoha would only venture out of her crate to relieve herself. Amanda and her husband spent countless hours at her side, providing support and companionship. Slowly but surely, Leialoha’s confidence grew, and she began seeking comfort under the coffee table for naps. In just two weeks, Leialoha’s spirit blossomed, and she displayed the playful nature of a typical puppy. Amanda shared, “She would play with our dogs, engage in catch with my husband, and then snuggle up next to me for a nap. We gave Leialoha the time and space she needed to heal and regain her confidence.”
Although initially intended for adoption by a family on the Big Island, circumstances took an unexpected turn when the Krasniewski family’s other dog fell ill. Leialoha returned to their care, and it became evident that she had found her forever home with the Krasniewskis. Today, Leialoha exudes happiness and health, a testament to the unwavering care and love provided by Amanda and her family. Overflowing with boundless energy, she spends her days playing and seeking attention. She may be a bit noisy and demanding at times, but she’s an incredibly affectionate pup who adores everyone around her. This remarkable journey from a tragic beginning to a joyful present underscores the resilience and capacity for love that resides within every living being.
