Chihuahua hour! 11 tiny dogs arrive at Battersea in one week

March 19, 2024 by Pham Hien

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home’s London site has been inundated with unwanted Chihuahuas, with 11 arriving through the centre’s doors in just one week. With this being a very popular breed, one or two per week is fairly average, so this overload of little dogs is quite unusual.

The pack have various origins, and range in age from puppy to senior. White pup Little Paris is only 12 weeks old, and was surrendered after her owners decided they could not care for her. The oldest in the group is 11-year-old George, a chocolate Chi found alone on the streets.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home Dog Rehoming and Welfare Manager Becky Fisher said, “We’d normally expect to see one or two Chihuahuas come through our doors in a week, so to have 11 arrive is quite exceptional. We’re certainly all being kept on our toes by our little Chihuahua crowd!”

She continued, “Although it’s very rare to see so many in at one time, it might surprise people to know that Chihuahuas are in the top 10 most common breeds that we see coming through our doors. This is partly because they’re such popular dogs in the wider community, but we also find people can underestimate them. Chihuahuas may be little, but they have big personalities. They’re generally full of energy and need to be exercised and mentally stimulated. As with any other breed, it’s also important to ensure they’re socialised properly with other dogs. Anyone looking to take on a Chihuahua needs to put a lot of thought into it, as they’re just as big a commitment as any other dog.”

Ten years ago it would be unthinkable to have so many unwanted Chihuahuas in need of new homes; they really were the dog of the decade, with noughties icons such as Paris Hilton boosting this breed’s profile, and sending puppy prices sky-high. Sadly, it seems, they have become a victim of their own success. In the last year, Battersea’s three centres took in 91 Chihuahuas, with 51 arriving at the London site alone.

Thankfully, homes have now been secured for all of this week’s Chihuahuas, but there will inevitably be more available to loving new owners in the future. To register your interest in rehoming a Battersea dog of any size call 0843 509 4444 or visit
