Sabrina Carpenter has opened up about being shamed for embracing her sexuality.
If you didn’t know, Sabrina, 25, hasn’t shied away from being vulgar when it comes to sexual innuendos. During her Emails I Can’t Send tour, she became known for ad-libbing a new NSFW outro to her song “Nonsense” each night, while her latest album, Short n’ Sweet, features several sexual lyrics.
Sabrina has also become renowned for performing in sexy outfits and lingerie amid her current Short n’ Sweet tour — while teasing different sex positions on stage throughout her shows, too.
Now, Sabrina has gotten candid about receiving some backlash for her embracing her sexuality so openly.
In a new interview with Time, Sabrina said that she is “definitely” vilified by some in the same way that pop icons Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were.
Sabrina pointed out that while artists like Christina and Britney, as well as Beyoncé, Madonna, and Rihanna, helped to pave the way for female artists to embrace their sexuality, she still gets criticism from “the occasional mother.”
“But you’ll still get the occasional mother that has a strong opinion on how you should be dressing. And to that I just say, don’t come to the show and that’s OK,” she said.
“It’s unfortunate that it’s ever been something to criticize, because truthfully, the scariest thing in the world is getting up on a stage in front of that many people and having to perform as if it’s nothing. If the one thing that helps you do that is the way you feel comfortable dressing, then that’s what you’ve got to do,” she added.
