The NFL offseason has been a whirlwind of trades, blockbuster signings, and major contract extensions, with teams making aggressive moves to position themselves for the 2025 season. Yet, one massive domino remains standing: Aaron Rodgers.
While it’s now clear that Rodgers’ time with the New York Jets is over, what remains uncertain is where the four-time MVP will land next. With free agency and the draft reshaping the quarterback market, speculation has swirled about possible destinations, and one name has emerged in the conversation repeatedly—the Minnesota Vikings.
Are the Vikings Seriously Considering Rodgers?
Initially, NFL insider Adam Schefter seemed to dismiss the idea of Rodgers heading to Minnesota, telling ESPN Milwaukee earlier this week that he does not currently consider the Vikings a realistic landing spot.
“I’m not including Minnesota in the Aaron Rodgers conversation until I have a reason to,” Schefter said. “There are no absolutes at this time of year—anything could always happen. But I just don’t view them as a primary option right now. Minnesota, to me, is setting sail with J.J. McCarthy.”
Schefter’s stance suggests that the Vikings are all-in on McCarthy, their first-round rookie quarterback, and are preparing to hand him the reins from day one. However, other NFL insiders see a much more complicated scenario playing out.
Reports Suggest Rodgers Wants Minnesota—And the Vikings Are Weighing It
According to Dianna Russini and Mike Silver of The Athletic, the Vikings haven’t ruled out the idea of bringing in a veteran quarterback, with Rodgers strongly in the mix. The team has also reportedly evaluated other experienced quarterbacks to pair with McCarthy, rather than committing fully to the rookie just yet.
Silver expanded on this report during an appearance on Joe & Q on Thursday, stating:
“That is really up to Kevin O’Connell and the decision-makers in the Vikings building. We believe that Aaron Rodgers’ first choice is to play for the Vikings. This is something they are strongly considering and weighing.”
While nothing has been confirmed, if the Vikings decide to make a push for Rodgers, Silver believes it’s highly likely a deal would get done.

The Vikings’ Quarterback Dilemma: Win Now vs. Build for the Future
Minnesota’s uncertainty at quarterback has been a major storyline this offseason. After Kirk Cousins departed for the Atlanta Falcons, the team briefly turned to Sam Darnold, only to see him sign elsewhere in free agency. With Daniel Jones also out of the picture, the Vikings suddenly find themselves in a high-risk, high-reward situation.
They have two clear paths:
- Commit fully to J.J. McCarthy as their Week 1 starter, accepting growing pains but allowing him to develop.
- Bring in Rodgers as a bridge quarterback, giving the team a better chance to compete immediately while McCarthy learns behind him.
For a roster built to win now, adding a quarterback like Rodgers makes sense on paper. He remains one of the most talented passers in NFL history, and with a loaded receiving corps featuring Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, the Vikings’ offense could immediately become one of the most dangerous in the league.
Silver summed it up this way:
“With a team built to win now, and obviously a great quarterback expert in Kevin O’Connell—the reigning Coach of the Year—and with one of the all-time great quarterbacks sitting out there, it is a very enticing prospect.”
The Risks of Bringing in Rodgers
While the potential upside of acquiring Rodgers is clear, the risks are equally significant.
- Rodgers has struggled with injuries in recent years, including the torn Achilles that sidelined him for nearly all of the 2024 season.
- At 41 years old, he is far from a long-term solution.
- Bringing in Rodgers could complicate McCarthy’s development, forcing the rookie into an awkward waiting period that could delay his growth.
Ultimately, the Vikings’ front office must decide whether chasing short-term success is worth the long-term implications.
What’s Next for Rodgers?
For now, Rodgers remains in limbo. Reports suggest that Minnesota is weighing their options, and if they decide to pursue the future Hall of Famer, the interest is mutual. However, there’s also a real possibility the Vikings opt to stick with McCarthy—leaving Rodgers to explore other options.
Beyond Minnesota, the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers have also been floated as potential landing spots, but neither situation appears to be as far along in discussions as the Vikings speculation.
As the NFL world waits for the next big quarterback move, Rodgers’ future remains one of the most intriguing offseason mysteries. Will he land in Minnesota, embrace a fresh start, and try to lead the Vikings to a Super Bowl—or will the team stick with their rookie, leaving Rodgers to find a new home elsewhere?
For now, the Vikings will deliberate, fans will refresh their phones, and Rodgers will continue to ponder his next move—perhaps, as always, somewhere near the ocean.
