The prosecutor’s office handling the case said in a statement that the toxicology report is still pending
Liam Payne died from multiple injuries and “internal and external” hemorrhages after falling from his hotel balcony, according to a preliminary autopsy report.
Payne died from multiple injuries and “internal and external” hemorrhages, the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE.
The coroners confirmed to PEOPLE that 25 injuries in the autopsy were “compatible with those caused by a fall from a height” and noted that “the head injuries were sufficient to cause death,” while the “internal and external hemorrhages” of the skull, thorax, abdomen and limbs contributed to Payne’s death.
They also confirmed that “no defensive injuries were found” and no injuries suggested that any third parties were involved.
The prosecutor’s office handling the case said in a statement that the toxicology report is still pending.
On Wednesday, Oct. 16, the former One Direction member was pronounced dead at 31 at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Policía Federal Argentina confirmed to PEOPLE.
On Thursday, Oct. 17, local authorities confirmed to PEOPLE that Payne jumped from the balcony of his hotel room before his death and that an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
According to a 911 call translated by publications including Sky News and the BBC, the hotel’s chief receptionist alerted police after becoming worried about Payne’s behavior.

Per a translated La Nacion transcript, the employee presumed Payne (who was not identified by name on the call) was “under the influence of alcohol and drugs” and insisted that someone needed to come “urgently” to the location.
The worker also mentioned that Payne’s life might be “in danger” because he was “in a room with a balcony,” according to Sky News.

“We’re afraid he could do something that threatens his life,” said the manager — who said his name was “Esteban” — according to the outlet.
The BBC transcript also stated that the employee said Payne had been “trashing the entire room” before his death.
